Getting started!
Congratulations! If you are on this page then you have almost made it to the end of your 5th grade year at Emma K. Doub. As a student in Mr. Dulberger's class you have accomplished many challenging tasks. From delivering a weather report with a green screen, to publishing iBooks, this year has been filled with purposeful projects. Out of all of the tasks and challenges you have faced, this particular project could have the greatest potential impact on our local community. Spring 2016 is the first year for the 5th Grade Legacy Project. In other words, you will be the first 10-11 year old students to take on and conquer this exciting challenge.

Task Details
Step 1: Take some time to reflect on experiences that you have had in the Hagerstown community. Talk with your friends and family about the places you frequently go or places you’d like to go more. Discuss any memories that you have had at these places. Ask yourself how the general public views these places. Are they appreciated? Under-appreciated?
Step 2: Choose ONE place in the Hagerstown community to focus on for this project. Complete the Google Doc here with your name and selected treasure next to it.
Step 3: Complete a Need to Know Board on SMART Amp and share it with me. As you perform this pre-research protocol, ask yourself the following:
What do I already know about this place? (Prior knowledge)
What do I need to find out about this place in order to speak knowledgeably? (Research)
How will I find this information? (Sources)
Step 4: Begin your research. I am not requiring you to use a specific graphic organizer or research methodology for this particular project. I am simply reminding you of the research skills and methods that your wonderful teacher has taught you this year.

Big 6 Research Method
If possible, I encourage you to make field experience part of your research. In other words, try and take at least one visit to the place you have chosen to study for this project.
Step 5: As you finish your research take time to begin planning the commercial you will create. Please remember that your finished commercial will be between 60 and 90 seconds. Use the iMovie Planning Sheet to plan your project. Here are some additional tips and ideas to consider:
Think about various camera angles that will highlight all aspects of the treasure that you chose to focus on.
How can you transition between photos and videos to make a smoother commercial?
Will your commercial include on screen annotations and/or text?
What narration will be included in your commercial? Will there be subtitles?
How can music support the theme, mood, and tone of your commercial? Is the music authentic? If not, is it cited?
How can you effectively utilize other multimedia production applications and/or effects into this project? (i.e. Touch cast, Explain Everything, DoInk Green screen, PowToon, Adobe Voice, iOS time-lapse slow motion, fast forward, freeze frame) - Remember your home base is always iMovie and your final project will be edited and exported from there. On the other hand, this does not mean that you can’t integrate the use of other applications.
Please submit your iMovie Planning Sheet to me by __due date__.
Step 6: Start producing! After submitting your iMovie Planning Sheet it is time for production to begin. Start taking the videos and photos you need to build your 60-90 second commercial. I encourage you to edit your frames as you go rather than wait until the very end. Do your best to follow your iMovie Planning Sheet but you may find yourself needing to change, add, or delete scenes. Please note these changes on your original iMovie Planning Sheet.
Step 7: As you near the completion of this project, I would like you to take time to consult the rubric. Please ask yourself, am I truly portraying this treasure as a unique place? Have I highlighted all of the aspects of this Hagerstown treasure? Did I use technology in a creative way to produce something that is quality and engaging for my intended audience?
Step 8: Take time to make any necessary changes to your final production before exporting the project out of iMovie. Once you are 110% certain that this project is your best work, please export this 60-90 second video file in HD to your camera roll. Once the video has been exported successfully, please upload this same file to the correct Google Drive folder. Rename the file appropriately.
Step 9: All commercials need to be in the correct Google Drive folder by __due date__. Our class with hold a viewing party with Miss Poling, Mrs. Anders and a few other special guests from the Hagerstown Community on __viewing party date__.
Step 10: After the viewing party, I will help each of you publish your commercials to various forms of social media for a broader audience to enjoy. We will post the entire project folder on Twitter from my account @mrdulberger and our class account @5thGradeU. Specifically the tweets will be targeted to @WashingtonCoMD and #wcpsmd. We will also vote as a class to choose three commercials to be posted on my YouTube channel and emailed to the Superintendent of WCPS, Dr. Wilcox.

Rationale
As stated in the introduction, the primary purpose of the 5th Grade Legacy Project is to provide you with an opportunity to telepublish information resources, specifically a multimedia presentation. Although we have done many research projects that result in a multimedia production this year, this particular project will be one that has the potential to impact a community that goes way beyond Emma K. Doub. The term “legacy” is often associated with tangible possessions and stories that an elder leaves behind. In this case, you are sharing a story on the World Wide Web that demonstrates a passion and deep understand of a specific treasure within the Hagerstown community. This story could very positively impact the life of a neighbor, friend, family member, or stranger. Even more, this story could revitalize the economic value of a place and ultimately make Hagerstown a better place to work, live, and grow. The 5th Grade Legacy Project truly does ask you to challenge, connect, create, and achieve.
