Blending the classroom with Khan Academy and LearnZillion
The blended instruction model is a new phenomenon that is being used more and more in our class. This model enables the teacher to become more of a "guide on the side" rather than a "sage on the stage." Ultimately, a blended classroom has the potential to increase student engagement in the classroom, promote student responsibility, and get parents more involved. In a blended classroom students receive some of their lectures and direct instruction in the form of videos, podcasts, and media at home or in more flexible learning space. They return to school feeling confident and ready to engage in project based learning tasks individually or in small groups. Depending on the content being delivered, the teacher may still decide to give a whole group model or lesson to his/her students. Regardless, they will facilitate discussions and higher order questions about the content being mastered. Khan Academy is a non-profit organization/website that is perfect for students who simply want to learn more! We all are part of a class and earn energy points as we engage in videos and practice on common core aligned standards, especially in math and science.
