Word Clouds in the #5thGradeU Classroom!
Word clouds have become popular in the classroom over the past few years. Students and teachers can both use them for content vocabulary, spelling lists, and much more. As my students are just about to transition from our Social Studies unit on the Constitution and early foundations of government to a Science unit on stars and the solar system, I found ABCya’s Word Cloud app to very helpful. As my students begin to write a new informative writing piece using the Book Creator app; they will need to choose from a list of topics that align with our new unit. Publishing this list of topics in a word cloud is much more exciting than a word document or written list.
Another use for this app could be a pre-assessment. Students might work independently or in small groups to create a word cloud about a subject or topic they are about to study. Word clouds could also include numbers and therefore serve a purpose in a math classroom. A teacher might gather a list of estimations from students and generate a word cloud from this list. Regardless of the app's use, this application easy to use and visually appealing for all ages!
